In 2023, Skagit River System Cooperative (SRSC) sampled Lone Tree Creek within and
upstream of the 1000 Trails Campground. The purpose of this monitoring effort is to continue to
evaluate the effectiveness of restoration actions completed in 2021 to replace log weirs with a
roughened channel to improve fish accessibility throughout the creek. The general approach was
to sample historical reaches to assess if the density of juvenile Chinook Salmon increased in the
upper portions of Lone Tree Creek post-project (Beamer et al. 2009 for details and Henrichs
2023a for first year of post project monitoring).
Lone Tree Creek has been the site of previous restoration efforts: initial work was completed in
2006 and had two main components (1) restore tidal hydrology to the historic drowned channel
part of Lone Tree Lagoon and (2) restore freshwater hydrology and sediment dynamics to Lone
Tree Creek immediately upstream of the lagoon. Specific restoration actions included replacing
three undersized and perched campground road culverts with larger steel arches that were set to
gradient of the creek and installing log weirs to maintain channel grade just upstream of the
drowned channel.
